The Children of God

Leaders travelled all over the world, constantly spreading their message. Members weren't allowed to hold jobs so relied on donations as well as sales of literature and tapes. Followers were living in communal homes with multiple families and many children to each bedroom. They considered themselves to be independent of mainstream society,. self supporting, self governing and self propagating. The group also believed strongly in spare the rod and spoil the child. Stories of physical abuse in these school homes are numerous. Former member mary mahoney wrote about her 30 years in a cult.
