The Relationship Between the Senate and Caesar

The Roman Republic was ruled by an oligarchy of wealthy families on both sides of the original class divide. Threats to upend the established order were dealt with swiftly and harshly, usually in the form of social ostracism. Caesar turned his back on that status to champion popular causes as a way to reach the top of the political ladder. Because of this betrayal, the conservative Senate hated Caesar.
