The Importance of Individual Rights in Democracy

In democratic societies, the state becomes this all encompassing thing just as much as in oligarchic societies. Not everyone could be as successful and relatively peaceful as Athens. Since political power meant the ability to enforce one's interests, often the partisan politics skewed along class lines. Without anachronistically drawing on these concepts such as individual rights and freedoms, there is no reason in principle that the state can't do whatever it wants.
