Brad Kelly: Joyce had a complicated relationship to everything that he resented. He flip flops between sort of despising the Irish character and loving the Irish character. The English never, the English sort of didn't trust the Irish because of how Catholic they were, right? They always were, they were Papists, right? So they were never quite friends with the Irish. And then there's the Catholicism business as well. That was sort of the thing. When everybody started to die and starve and flee the country, the kind of attitude is like you pull yourself up by your bootstraps,. Like what's your problem just because you're lazy and can't handle this situation?"
