The book says Cathy was not yet aware of her own personality changes. Father mancuso, who blessed the house, has the flue and is very sick. And then cath feels the spirit of a woman embracing her in the kitchen. It's initially kind of nice, but then this sweet perfume smell starts making her dizzy. Then she shouts, no, leave me alone, and the ghost departs which is very polite. I'm just going to be spit palling on this the whole way through.
