As a rat moves about its environment, it takes soundings almost independently of any trigger in the external environment. It's taking a reading and gradually building up this internal picture of the world. And if something happens in that place, now the event that happened can be associated to the memory of that place. The hippocampus doesn't just make a map but is also involved in memory for life events.
