The Demand of the Big Other

The ocean is a perfect example of anxiety. We're talking about the desire of the big other, not a demand. Demand according to Lacan is exactly what the neurotic wants from the big other. Think of the praying mantis example again. Well what's terrifying and angst provoking is not knowing how you are caught up in their desire. In that moment you would like nothing more than for the prayingmantis to just tell you what they want from you. This is why one of the really important things that's happening in the first part of this book is the stuff we were reading last time around demand.
