When to Ask a Faculty Member to Write a Letter of Recommendation

As someone who briefly taught and got asked for recommendation letters, please give them some time. Sometimes those letters from alumni connections can feel a little forced to me if there's not substance there. You should never feel badly about asking a faculty member to write a letter of recommendation. Of course you have to be respectful, give them plenty of lead time but do not view it is asking them for a favor.
