The Role of Status Mobility in Depression
The social competition hypothesis is a theory of depression. It suggests that depression might have evolved as a means to avoid confrontation. All animals, including humans, organize hierarchies based on status. And more specifically, status mobility has a huge role to play in how we feel. So if you're moving up the status rung, then that is exhilarating, that is joyful, that is uplifting. When you're falling down the status run, then you might feel depressed and upset. There's lots of evidence now to back it up.
