In the 19 seventies, a lesbian community organization called sappho started arranging for some of its members to receive artificial insemination treatment that they could conceive. There was so much hostility and stigma around being gay at that time that any doctor who was helping lesbians conceive, although it wasn't actually illegal, was really taking a risk with their reputation.
