In september four 54, aetius was in ravenna briefing the emperor and his ministers on the state of the army's finances. Valentinian stabbed him to death when he turned his back for a moment. Etius had more or less held the western empire together for 21 years. The story may have been invented later to give a more emotional explanation for maximus actions.
