The search andory of nutrinos is such a beautiful analogy for dark matter. Astronomers were not able to detect it, that that didn't interact with regular matter in any way. They had to develop multiple different capture mechanisms to finally figure out a way to detect them. And they were dark matter, and then they and now they're a known particle.
