Pope Francis is a Jesuit, not a secular priest. He didn't come up through the normal diocesan ranks but rather was part of a religious order. The academic institutional Catholicism, like all academic institutions, has become increasingly left over time. John Paul II and Benedict XVI were very much seen as sort of voices counter to that consensus.
