Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

CHAPTER

Mozart's E Minor Transition

Three themes in a short movement have to work together seamlessly, as if you don't even realize a new one is coming. Mozart took the third of a G major chord and transformed it into the fifth of an E minor chord. He then takes us through a dizzying shift of keys, from D minor to B flat major and back to D minor again. Playing music like this requires a remarkable amount of finesse and creativity from both the players and the conductor.
