"This gets very fevered at times with first Pearl and then Chillingworth being associated with the devil. They're interesting secular themes too about identity forms of authority and the individual versus society but gosh Hawthorne is heavy handed with his symbolism," she said. "He doesn't leave a lot of room for like you know read what you want into this."
