When you read accounts of people who knew Napoleon, the comment you see most often is probably on his work ethic. He wasn't born with that insatiable work ethic; it was drilled into him both by his strict education and by unfortunate personal circumstances. Another thing I want to emphasize is his love of books and learning. Even when he ruled France, he did a lot of his own research. As we'll see, Napoleon actually came close to pursuing a career as an intellectual.
