The US's Role in Liberia
In May, with time running out, we had to take some key decisions. The safety of American citizens was our foremost concern. Fearing a possible worst-case scenario, the working group requested a U.S. Naval Task Force deployment for emergency evacuations if required. We encouraged Americans to leave while the airport was still open but most were dual nationals with closer ties to Liberia than the United States.
