The Opposite to the Insurance Argument for Long-Term Investors

A value portfolio has less of that mean-reverting risk reduction than the market index does. The argument for conservative investors is that if you hold value, you end up increasing your long-term risk. By going away from growth, you preserve the value of your portfolio when discount rates go up. And you want to have a portfolio that's valuable and available for reinvestment at those moments when discount rates are high.
