jefferson was a great believer in progress, in things being better in the future than they were in the present. But he well understood the basic problem with his way of life and wrote damning and inciteful criticisms of the institution that made it possible. I think all us are hypocritical when we have an intellectual belief about something, but we don't have the will to act upon those beliefs. Jefferson did not know what to do about slavery.
