Bob Marley and the Rostafari Movement in the West Indies
Bob Marley's music helped popularize real issues of African liberation, says UC Koyana. He was born in rural St Anne to a white father and black mother; he came of age in the slums of Trenchtown. His embrace of Rostafari and Pan-Africanism was no doubt related to his experience of inequality. After Marley's conversion, his music frequently referred to Rostafari with titles such as Rostaman Chant.
