Is There a Divided Society?
Wells imagined a division of human society into two branches, a division far deeper than any known to us inasmuch as it is projected so far in the future that it has become biological and speciated. His sympathies should have been with the masses, but in his heart they were not. He tells us in his autobiography that he always knew himself to be different from his fellows. At any rate, we imagine our social fractures to be wider, deeper and more acute than ever before.
