The Trial of the 38th Street Gang

The Sleepy Lagoon gang trial was held in 1943. Five of the defendants were acquitted, but others were found guilty and sentenced to prison. The case inflame tensions between Mexican-American youth and Anglo communities. After two years of advocacy by the Sleepy lagoon Defense Committee, these convictions were overturned on appeal in 1944.
