The first man to be killed by the process that gets to be called electrocution is William Kenler who'd murdered his common law wife with an axe. Electrocution, new word entering the vocabulary became the means of executing criminals in the US by the beginning of the 20th century. By the 1940s, I think half of all American states have adopted it as the execution method - and they're still doing it more than a century later. People start developing this kind of nervous-way telegraph system from late 1840s onwards. You can communicate around the world very fast,. but again electricity plays a part in how people understand what's going on.
