Becker notes that philology has become a near obsolescent term into disjunct and rival risk specialties. He also describes the division between those who study individual texts, and then in parentheses, historians, editors, critics,. Those who study the activity of creating texts in general, linguists, psychologists, ethnographers, who like to call themselves scientists. It seemed to be very big in the late 19th century as a field of study, but has kind of teetered out since.
