The Prohibition Loophole
Part of the exceptions in the Volstead Act concerned winemaking at home. The head of a family who has properly registered may make 200 gallons of wine exclusively for family use without payment of tax. Over 700 million gallons of homemade wine was produced by Americans during Prohibition, triple the amount they drank in the previous decade.
