The Reformed Replaced the Doctrine of the Descended

Among the Reformed, several Reformers believed in a local descent of Christ. But they became convinced that what it actually means to descend to hell is something other than a local descent. So Calvin's view of penal substitutionary atonement and Christ's experience of our judgment in our place on the cross inwardly, he says that is what it means to descending to hell because Jesus is suffering torments of hell for us.
