Professor Andrew Gosler is the author of The Selfish Gene, published in 1976. He says Richard Dawkins' central theme was that genes were basic units of evolution. This struck a chord with Professor Gosler, but not in the way Dawkins intended. 'If you wish to build a society in which individuals cooperate generously and unselfishly towards a common good, you can expect little help from biological nature,' he writes.
