One Horse Open Slay was a secular song. It had nothing to do with Christmas, and it wouldn't until the early 20th century. Sleigh, S-L-E-I-G-H, is a sled that is pulled by horses or reindeer through the snow. In Medford, Massachusetts, they'll proudly tell you that James Lord Pierpont, the writer of Jingle Bells, was referring to their local sleigh races in the 1800s. That's what the song was about.
