Almost everywhere else in europe, any opposition to the traditional ruling alite had to stay underground. But there were a few self described radicals sitting in parliament. During the american war of independence, radical whigs openly expressed sympathy for the rebels. It's hard to imagine something like that being tolerated anywhere else.
