The Story of Alvar Nunez's Cabaza De Vaca

Alvar Nunez's expedition built five boats and sailed them west to Mexico. The goal was to reach Spanish-held territory near present-day Tampico, about 1500 miles away. Disaster would strike the small flotilla in the fall of 1528 when they reached where the Mississippi River pours into the Gulf of Mexico. Cabaza de Vaca said that the men in his boat were basically passed out on top of each other.
