The Problem With Faulkner

There's a commonly held view that Faulkner the novelist was maybe better than Faulkner, the person. Is that how Faulkner viewed himself? Did he sort of think, well, if you really want to know what I think, look to my novels, or in my novels, I'm a better person than I am in real life? We don't know. He did answer questions about his novels, but people never got very far in answering those questions because he put so much himself in the novels.
