Rhetoric is sometimes a pajoritive term, and we wonder whether it means manipulation of an audience. I think you're getting at something central there. Maybe emotions really do have a legitimate place, not just in persuasion, but in justification. And i think that might be related to stuff we've done on hume and the theory of moral sentiments.
