The general premise is essentially create a user model and throw different types of predictive models into that. Have you seen that framework work? I've seen Apple or recommenders work really well as blog posts, like really well. It's just to say that people aren't using deep learning probably hundreds of thousands of implementations that are out there. To power a recommender on a website, it's generally going to be one of the tried and true.
