The History of Chess
When chess started getting played the goal was simply to capture more pieces than the other person. It wasn't until later that it became clear that checkmate was a state in which you could make the goal. The complexity of chess is such that when you look at a certain position like he describes in diagram six you don't know if that's legal or not.
