The merrimac was described as looking like a barn roof made out of iron. The monitor was something entire different. It was armor plated below the water line, so you couldn't ram it. You could only hit this round tower with two big dolgran guns in it. And that was all, that was all they could hit. They were basically not sinkable by cannon fire.
