Did the Library Company Import Books While They Occupied Philadelphia?
In September 1777, the British General William Howe and his soldiers capture Philadelphia from the Patriots. The library company was on the second floor of a building called Carpenter's Hall. You couldn't get upstairs through the hospital to use the library. So we basically closed it. And there was even a notice that we sent out that the members who want books from the library will have to get them at the librarian's house.
