The Power of Confronting the Reflection in the Mirror
Eileen Miles is a queer poet, so that act of that moment of confronting the reflection in the mirror is particularly fraught in this instance. I mean, it's a poem about writing and the sacredness of writing. And Miles is announcing that they can do this thing, but they're also announcing that they feel bad, even in spite of being able to do this thing when they look in the mirror. Sometimes they don't want to looking in the mirror and they can't bear their thoughts because looked in the mirror, as June said, it's not a confrontation with the truth of oneself necessarily. It's a confrontation with yourself in relation to a world that might not understand what you have
