Does the Self Sufficient Man Need Friends?

Seneca says that the self sufficient man does not need friends. But on the other hand, he kind of does. And so for seneca, friendship is something sought for its own sake. He distinguishes from it, higher friendships versus friendships that are merely pleasurable or useful. This comes straight o of the nicomachean ethics. You need to be able to withdraw into yourself and be profoundly disordered if you can't do that.
