In 1992, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit became the biggest song in the world. The video showed people mashing in a dank dark high school gym. By the early 1990s, it had spread to the dozens of offshoots of punk and grunge. Of course, there's head banging, stage diving and crowd surfing. There's also the much more nerve-racking wall of death.
