The Meacham's Floating Freedom School
The Mississippi River is the border between Missouri and Illinois. John Berry Meachum built a school in the middle of the river to educate black students. His wife, Mary, led nine slaves across the river for freedom after his death. The Floating Freedom School continued until 1860 when it was shut down due to low enrollment.
