The Importance of Uncertainty

Our craving for certainty requires that we become willfully blind, ignoring often what we most need to pay attention to. As the physicist Carlo Rivelli argues, great scientists are never certain. They're driven by doubt, more inspired by questions than answers. That vast intermediate space of ambiguity and uncertainty is also the territory occupied by artists.
