The Pathogenesis of Cerebral Salt Warrior and SIDH

In the setting of central nervous system injury or following a neurosurgical procedure, hyponatremia is usually attributed to SIDH. More recently it has become apparent that an increasing number of neurosurgical patients can have cerebral salt wasting. The key distinguishing feature between cerebral salt wasting and SIDH is extra cell volume depletion. You can establish this assessment by serial monitoring of urine output, clinical exam, central venous pressure monitoring and daily weights in the patient. It appears to be due to release of neterioratic peptides such as ANP or atrialNeterioratic Peptide (ANP)
