The Crimean Coast

The Black Sea is going to play a far more important role in the history of Byzantium than it ever did in Rome. In fact, an area of Roman interest that I don't recall coming up in the podcasts before is the Crimea. The southern coast of the modern Crimea had long long ago been colonised by the Greeks. It was Vespasian, who was the first emperor to send troops to occupy a military camp there called Chirax.
