The first recognizable chain letter started to spread from the 1500s on across Europe. There were basically Ponzi schemes, right? Like you would be asked to pay money to whoever's name was on top of the list in order to avoid bad luck. The commonality between all of these things and chain letters is like, it offers you sort of a feeling of protection from the inherent randomness of life.
