How to Write Dialogue Where the Characters Are Afraid
Short sentences are punchy, and add a percussive action feel to the scene of fear. The characters likely shouldn't know all that is happening in the scene; their dialogue should reflect that. Slow down the time by having the characters notice detail more than usual. An action combined with dialogue is a way to ramp up the tension.
