The Islanders Refer to the Villages

There are three main villages on the island called Takunumi, Kotipolo and Te Langakula. Islanders refer to them as Taipani, which means Japan, Malike or Amalike, which means the United States and Olani, which Means Holland. Main is a synonym for principle - it's another word for principle. For most countries, we do not need to use an article. But when it comes to the U.S., we do use an article because states is a noun.
