You Don't Want a Reference From Someone Who Isn't Really Short Term
Six months is a decent amount of time to really get the measure of you, isn't it? I think the measure of someone in much shorter time than that. What you don't want is a reference from someone who perhaps it was a very, very short term thing where they were extraordinarily brief. You can usually tell if someone's sort of... when you hear one side of a story - for example, if I were to read a reference my friend had always nagging me about leaving the fridge door open.
