Sensience and the Ability to Feel Pain
The ability to feel pain creates a dividing line in nature between animals or subjects of a theory of justice. This includes sentience including all vertebrates and some invertebrates. All of these are represented by surrogates, by guardians. And so the same could be true of animals. Their interests can be represented when legislation is made by humans who are attended to their preferences.
