Pekingology

CHAPTER

Is There a New Phase of Strategic Opportunity?

I had been thinking before reading your book, which is at what point does the leadership in Beijing drop the concept of strategic opportunity? You know, when do they say, look, the external environment is just way too hostile. But now I wonder if maybe that's not the right way to think about it: If underlying this idea is we need to work harder because the threats are more manifest, then they don't need to drop it. It's always something to be pursued. And with the term US-China competition, and China becomes a protagonist, now the possibility of war becomes possible, if not inevitable.
