Zen actually has a statement that encapsulates this paradox. If there's no discipline in the Tao, one remains an ignoramus. It's always already fully present, literally 100%. And there's never a point in your life when you're not directly in touch with that fully enlightened mind. But clearly there are times when you realize that and then you can also look back and realize there are times you didn't realize that.
